Talya Layne
Stifling defence and the hot hands of Talya Layne were the principal weapons used by Signia Light & Power Titans to run over Pine Hill St. Barnabas 34-19 as Division 3 action continued in the Barbados Netball Association season at the Netball Stadium on Friday night.
Layne scored 32 goals from 37 attempts and invariably scored once her team-mates found her with their passes. Goal attack Cheryl Newton-Holder scored the other two goals from six attempts.
But it was the Titans’ defence that stood out limiting St. Barnabas to a mere 31 attempts at goal over the four quarters of the game. Former national Sonia Banfield got nothing easy and had to fight for every goal scored when she did receive in-coming passes, several of which were intercepted or simply went awry as a result of the defensive pressure from Titans’ wing defence and goal keep.
Banfield had 13 goals from 18 attempts but could have probably been more productive with better service. Goal attack Latricia Busby had six goals but shot at less than 50 per cent, making some 13 attempts at goal.
The second quarter was the pivotal period for Titans as they managed to open up a five-goal advantage (15-10) after the first quarter had finished with honours even at 7-7.Titans extended their advantage in the third quarter where they scored 11 goals to a mere four netted by St. Barnabas (26-14).
St. Barnabas’ Division I unit fared much better than their counterparts when they mauled Guardian General Pride of Villa 51-35. National player Laurel Browne was in good shooting touch netting 41 goals from 45 attempts while goal attack Sheniqua Thomas chipped in with 10 goals from 19 attempts.
Kimberley Brathwaite led Pride of Villa’s offensive efforts but missed more attempts than she would have probably liked. She netted 19 goals from 31 attempts. A greater role could have perhaps been given to Latonia Blackman who missed just two of her 12 attempts while Nadia Blackman had six goals from 11 attempts.In other Division1 action, C.O Williams Rangers’ Vanessa Reid Cox’s 26 goals from 31 attempts were more than the entire Phoenix Gems line-up could manage as Rangers beat them 41-25.
Shonica Wharton was the principal scorer for Gems netting 19 goals from 23 attempts.
In other matches played Almond Lions beat Boscobel 19-13 (Div. 6); UWI Blackbirds edged Simply Distinctive Fantasy Ballers 20-19 (Div.6); Newbury Ballers thrashed Friendship Stars 38-15 (Div.5); Shottas United whipped Lucky Horseshoe Police Sports Club 38-21 (Div.5); Bathsheba Combined defeated Fusion Netball Club 19-17 (Div.4); and Hot Spurs beat Simply Distinctive Fantasy Ballers 43-34 (Div.2).†††
