Graydon Sealy thrashed Christ Church Foundation girls 38-18 on Thursday to earn a place in the semi-final round of the WIBISCO Senior Girls Basketball Competition.
Played at their Paddock Road-based institution, Graydon Sealy sent a strong message to all opposition that just like their male counterparts, they are also hungry for the female trophy which was won by Queen’s College last year. The game was commanded by the host who dominated 5-5, 22-9 and 34-15 at the end of the first three periods.
Shonica Wharton with 12 points and Latifah Wood, 11, were the leading lights for Graydon Sealy. Playing in her usual role as guard for the winners, Ashantia Phillips also chipped in with nine while for Foundation Stephian Shepherd top- scored with ten points and Tamara Trotman, eight.

Foundation’s top scorer Stephian Shepherd (with ball) looks to make a move on Graydon Sealy’s strong defence.
The first quarter started off so slowly that half-way through the period there was no score on the board. However that changed soon afterwards thanks to Wood and Wharton who scored two points each for the hosts, along with Phillips with a free-throw.
Despite her school not having the best of outings in the competition, Trotman continues to be one of the stand-out players for Foundation. She hustled on defence and scored a three pointer in the quarter to give her school a bit of momentum. Shepherd’s basket made it all even going into the second quarter.
Wharton was at the heart of Graydon Sealy’s strategy in the second quarter. The center defended well and also dished out a number of accurate assists, especially to forward Wood and Phillips who invariably scored every ball which came their way. Graydon Sealy tallied 17 points in that quarter.
It was good defensive and offensive basketball by the trio which caused significant headaches for Foundation who managed just four points in that quarter. Foundation were frequently lapse on defence, failing to make it back downcourt to prevent Wood and company from scoring. Wharton and Wood scored six and five points respectively in the quarter.

Foundation’s struggles continued in the penultimate quarter as they only managed six points. Graydon Sealy, knowing they were in a good position, made a number of substitutions to give a few more of their players some court time. Wood and Phillips each scored four points while Shepherd scored four for Foundation. Graydon Sealy scored 12 points in the quarter.
The game noticeably slowed down in the decisive quarter but Graydon Sealy remained in the driver seat. Only four points were scored by the hosts in the quarter with Danielah Clarke and Wood scoring two each while for Foundation Aisha Trimmingham managed two points and Trotman a free-throw.
Graydon Sealy will meet either Springer Memorial, Combermere or Queen’s College in the semi-final round to be decided next week.
