A second quarter meltdown from which they could not recover eventually led to Barbados’ netballers being beaten 38-37 by Trinidad and Tobago in their first match at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, today.
After outscoring Trinidad and Tobago 13-9 in the first quarter, the Barbadians came under immense pressure from the Trinidadians while their offence went cold. Barbados were limited to six goals in the second quarter, a tally which Trinidad and Tobago doubled to take a 21-19 at the half-time interval.
The third quarter was once again a closer affair with Barbados netting eight goals to Trinidad and Tobago’s eight.
The final quarter was an exciting affair with the two teams exchanging goals but that was not going to be good enough for Barbados who started the quarter down 27-28.
Despite their best efforts Barbados could not erase that one-goal disadvantage with both teams scoring 10 goals in the final quarter to give Trinidad the close win.
Sixteen-year-old Sheniqua Thomas led the scoring for Barbados with 19 goals from 26 attempts while Laurel Browne netted eight from eight in the low-scoring match. Nikita Piggott chipped in with seven goals from 11 attempts.
Kalifa McCollin (18 from 21) and Joelisa Cooper (16 from 21) led the scoring for Trinidad and Tobago.
