Barbados lost all three matches in the February 20-22 Tri-Nation netball series that ended over the weekend at the Tacarigua’s Eastern Regional Sport Complex Indoor Arena in Trinidad and Tobago.
After losing to Northern Ireland in their opening game, Barbados lost their final match to eventual tournament winners Trinidad & Tobago, 35-33, in an exciting match-up on Saturday.
Barbados were able to hold a slender lead at the end of the first quarter but Trinidad and Tobago took control by the half gaining a slim two-point lead themselves. Despite some long shots being scored by Shonica Wharton, all of the four shooters used throughout the game missed some simple short range shots.
During the match unforced errors also hampered Barbados’ efforts and by the end of the third period, the Trinidad and Tobago were able to add one to their tally and lead by three goals.
In the latter stages of the fourth quarter the hosts extended their advantage to a five-goal lead, but Barbados were able to fight back and pull within one goal. However, time was against Barbados and the Trinidadians were able to hold on and secure the important victory.
Barbados last played Northern Ireland in October 2013 in the inaugural Netball Festival in Ireland, while the last encounter with Trinidad and Tobago was in 2012 in the America’s Federation of Netball Association Championship. Barbados won both series.
The Barbados team comprised: Latonia Blackman (captain), Rhea-Ann Niles (vice-captain), Shonette Bruce, Shanice Rock, Shonica Wharton,
Sheniqua Thomas, Nikita Piggott, Laurel Browne, Samantha Browne, Damisha Croney, Sabreena Smith and Kizzy Marville.
